A Glance at Selected Philippine Political Caricature in Alfred McCoy’s Philippine Cartoons: Political Caricature of the American Era (1900-1941)

A Glance at Selected Philippine Political Caricature in Alfred McCoy’s Philippine Cartoons: Political Caricature of the American Era (1900-1941)Political cartoons and caricature are a rather recent art form, which veered away from the classical art by exaggerating human features and poking fun at its subjects. Such art genre and technique became a part of the print media as a form of social and political commentary, which usually targets persons of power and authority. Cartoons became an effective tool of publicizing opinions through heavy use of symbolism, which is different from a verbose written editorial and opinion pieces. The unique way that a caricature represents opinion and captures the audience’s imagination is a reason enough for historians to examine these political cartoons. Commentaries in mass media inevitably shape public opinion and such kind of opinion is worthy of historical examination. In his book Philippine Cartoons: Political Caricature of the American Era (1900-1941), Alfred McCoy, together with Alfredo Roces, compiled political cartoons published in newspaper dailies and periodicals in the aforementioned time period. For this part, we are going to look at selected cartoons and explain the context of each one. The first example was published in The Independent on May 20, 1916. The cartoon shows a politician from a Tondo, named Dr. Santos, passing his crown to his brother-in-law, Dr. Barcelona. A Filipino guy (as depicted wearing salakot and barong tagalog) was trying to stop Santos, telling the latter to stop giving Barcelona the crown because it is not his to begin with. The second example was also published by The Independent on 16 June 1917. This was drawn by Fernando Amorsolo and was aimed as a commentary to the workings of Manila Police at that period. Here, we see a Filipino child who stole a skinny chicken because he had nothing to eat. The police officer was relentlessly pursuing the said child. A man wearing a salakot, labeled Juan de la Cruz was grabbing the officer, telling him to leave the small-time pickpockets and thieves and to turn at the great thieves instead. He was pointing to huge warehouse containing bulks of rice, milk, and grocery products. The third cartoon was a commentary on the unprecedented cases of colorum automobiles in the city of streets. The Philippine Free Press published this commentary when fatal accidents involving colorum vehicles and taxis occurred too often already. The fourth cartoons depict a cinema. A blown-up police officer was at the screen saying that couples are not allowed to neck and make love in the theater. Two youngsters looked horrified while an older couple seemed amused. The next cartoon was published by The Independent on 27 November 1915. Here, we see the caricature of Uncle Sam riding a chariot pulled by Filipinos wearing school uniform. The Filipino boys were carrying American objects like baseball bats, whiskey, and boxing gloves. McCoy, in his caption to the said cartoon, Says that this cartoon was based on an event in 1907 when William Howard Taft was brought to the Manila pier riding a chariot pulled by students of Liceo de Manila. Such was condemned by the nationalists at that time.

14. Political caricature in the philippines with explanation

political cartoon(caricature), a drawing (often including caricature) made for the purpose of conveying editorial commentary on politics, politicians, and current events. Such cartoons play a role in the political discourse of a society that provides for freedom of speech and of the press. They are a primarily opinion-oriented medium and can generally be found on the editorial pages of newspapers and other journalistic outlets, whether in print or electronic form. Their subject matter is usually that of current and newsworthy political issues, and, in order for them to be understood, they require that readers possess some basic background knowledge about their subject matter, ideally that provided by the medium in which they are published.

A political cartoon is also an artistic vehicle characterized by both metaphorical and satirical language. It may point out the contexts, problems, and discrepancies of a political situation. Although a drawing reflects a cartoonist’s judgment and point of view and the visual commentary often exaggerates circumstances, responsible editorial standards do not allow the artist to alter facts.

17. Enumerate . Political caricature

Answer:

Thomas Nast

Senator James G. Blaine was an extremely popular Republican politician in the nineteenth century. He might have been elected president if he had not been continually dogged by charges of corruption. In 1888, when Blaine returned from a lengthy European trip, he refused to run for president, and instead supported Benjamin Harrison's campaign. However, Blaine's enormous popularity caused cartoonist Thomas Nast (1840–1902) to characterize him as the “uncrowned king” of the Republican Party. Nast defined American political cartooning in the nineteenth century. Through his work for Harper's Weekly, he popularized such American political symbols as the Republican elephant and the Democratic donkey.

29. 5 disadvantages of political caricature

Answer:

I’m not writing 5 of each, but here are the main strengths and weaknesses:

Advantages: In caricaturing a view, you can engage with the most absurd flaws in a particular position. It helps to make simplistic views look particular stůpîd, because they are the ones most easily caricatured. For me, it is very easy to laugh at libertarians, because the inherent contradiction that exists in the view is such an obvious one (that you need a state in order to defend the rights that they assert that everyone holds, and that the state requires funding, and therefore property rights can’t be absolute). When done correctly caricaturing can actually lead to deep insight about an idea, because caricature is about taking the defining features of something and making it prominent. It’s why memes are so popular. They are about understanding the trope and then replicating it.

Disadvantages: Politics requires nuance to properly debate our ideas. The degraded state of contemporary political discourse is largely attributable to the disingenuous oversimplification we have seen of ideas in our current political discussions. Many of our political disagreements are not just polarised, they involve deliberately misrepresenting the views and ideas of people, as well as their personal life.

Shows that caricature more conservative positions have done significant harm to our political debate, but many progressives would find this hard to acknowledge. Each individual joke alone might be funny, but at a certain point the entire premise of reducing people with particular views into a punchline demonstrates a significant lack of respect. It’s why the concept of a liberal elite is such a strong one, and is one that has great purchase in many rural and poorer communities that also tend to be conservative.

Caricature in moderation can be very good. But we see too much of it in contemporary public discourse, and it’s shaping the level of discourse which we can actually have.
